There’s no better place to get direct experience with child development than the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven! This past semester Dr. Melissa Whitson, Professor of Psychology at University of New Haven, partnered with our program team to create a semester-long volunteer experience for her Child Development service-learning students.

Dr. Whitson shared: “It was an amazing experience to once again collaborate with the Boys and Girls Club for my service-learning class. During their service, my students were able to mentor and supervise the children at the Club and observe first-hand many of the child development concepts we discussed in class. My students reflected on the experience and how they truly valued this opportunity to help the club and form connections with many of the children there.”

Alyssa Carr, the Club’s Program and Volunteer Coordinator commented: “After a year of virtual learning, our kids came back to the Club needing more support than usual, the UNH students/volunteers gave our kids the great support they needed with homework and more.”

Prior to the onset of the pandemic, we were fortunate that UNH students had a year-round presence at the Club. We look forward to continuing this collaboration for years to come.
