We are extending and enriching after school programs at Lincoln-Bassett Community School in the Newhallville section of New Haven. Approximately 100 additional K through 2 children will be served by BGCNH at this site. BGCNH is proud to participate in Lincoln-Bassett’s initiative to make this school a true community school with aspiration to revitalize the Newhallville community.

Lincoln-Bassett is part of a state-sponsored initiative that establishes schools as community hubs, accessible to children and families, including during evenings and weekends. Lincoln-Bassett is creating community partnerships to develop a unified focus on academics, services, supports and opportunities that lead to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. A key part of this effort includes optional before and after-school programs that provide extensive developmental support.

Partnering for After School Programs at Lincoln-Bassett

In recent years, we have collaborated with the Housing Authority of the city of New Haven to deliver after school and summer camp programs beyond our main club house in the Hill Section. We now serve children, many who are at risk, in the Authority’s West Rock and Eastview Terrace communities. We are pleased to report contract extensions for another 3 years. In 2015, we will be serving over 1000 children at our 4 sites – that’s a new milestone for us!.

While working closely with Lincoln-Bassett’s staff, we also will be collaborating with other organizations including the Boost! initiative, a United Way facilitated and managed effort, and the Connecticut Center for Arts & Technology (ConnCat).

Summer Brain Gain – A Recap of Week 1 & 2All members of the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven’s Summer Fun and Learning Program participated in the first two weeks of Summer Brain Gain, a series of lessons that support summer learning.

   Week 1

Each group, from 5-6 year olds to 11-14 year olds, began the first week with a lesson centered on the question: what makes you unique? Standing in a circle, our members each had an opportunity to share an interesting fact about themselves, as well as practice their public-speaking skills. What a way to break the ice!

Continuing with the theme of self-expression, our youngest members created their own superhero costumes to represent themselves. They proudly modeled their paper-plate masks and paper-tissue outfits for other club members and staff.

Week 2

During our second week, our Summer Brain Gain lessons shifted to the theme of motion, energy, and machines. After viewing and discussing a series of videos about inventions that capture kinetic energy from different types of human motion — from jumping to spinning — our 9-14 year olds shared inventions they would implement in their home. Our 9-14 boys later participated in a game of “Human Machine” Charades, where small groups used their bodies and sound effects to act out the function of different machines — from a popcorn-maker to a windmill.

On June 4, 2014, the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven invite you to join us for a very special evening. Heart & Soul, our 11th Annual Wine & Jazz fundraiser at the New Haven Lawn Club. This year our event will feature the soulful sounds of Motown brought to life by New Haven’s own, Deborah Bond and some of New Haven’s best young musicians. The night will also feature award winning food and wine, incredible art, a silent auction and much more! The money raised at this event will help the Club open our doors to great futures each day for our community’s most vulnerable young people.

Young people need to know that someone cares about them. The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven offers that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys & girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

What a wonderful performance by New Orleans native, Anitra Jay. On Tuesday, October 8th Anitra moved the crowd with her song “Today is a good day” while performing for BGCNH members. Her acoustic soul music was just what the members needed as they clapped to the rhythm.
