EXCEPTIONAL TEEN RECIEVES MOST PRESTIGIOUS HONOR; NAMED LOCAL YOUTH OF THE YEAR BY BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF NEW HAVEN

Z’hane Ellison set to receive college scholarship and vie for regional title this summer

New Haven, CT, March 17, 2016– Selected among several local outstanding youth, Z’hane will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Connecticut Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. As the new Youth of the Year for New Haven, 16 year old Z’hane is a true example of an extraordinary young woman recognized by BGCA for her leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

“The Youth of the Year candidates make me incredibly proud each year. I know their stories -how much each of them has overcome to reach their goals. It also highlights the impact of our work with youth and their families. The parents and staff are beaming with pride each year. These young people truly inspire all of us.” Stephanie Barnes, Executive Director.

LocalYOYEvent2016DSC_0436Z’hane has been a Club member at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven for a little over two years. Though she started off as a shy and reserved young lady, Z’hane has matured into a confident young woman. “My experiences at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven have helped me grow as a person and really learn to believe in myself.” As a counselor in training (C.I.T.) she began with the 7-8 year old group. She actively serves as a role model, mentor and homework helper. Recently, Z’hane was able to share her passion for fashion design with other members of the Club when she organized a Fashion Club at the Club. Z’hane is also a member of the Keystone Club, a leadership program for teens which provides opportunities to participate in activities that focus on Academic Success, Career Preparation and Community Service.

A junior at New Haven Academy, Z’hane has received honors this year and looks forward to challenging herself academically throughout high school. She is currently using the Fashion Club as the platform for her Senior Capstone Project for school. She strives to set an example for young children to overcome their insecurities and hopes to inspire them to never give up on their dreams.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year recognition program is presented by Disney, who has supported BGCA for more than 50 years, empowering young people to reach their full potential and providing youth with access to the tools they need to build the great futures they imagine. Toyota, the Signature Sponsor of Youth of the Year, is committed to helping improve the quality of life in our communities, and has demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring youth have access to a quality education. Additional support is provided by University of Phoenix, a national education partner that has joined with BGCA to impact academic success among youth across the country, and the Taco Bell Foundation, BGCA’s premier partner for teen empowerment.

If Z’hane wins at the state competition scheduled to take place in Hartford, Connecticut on Thursday, April 28th, she will compete for the title of Northeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September 2016, to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable each year up to $100,000 and will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States in the White House.

New Haven Register- “Distinction made me feel I can do anything”, said Z’hane Ellison

Our AAU basketball program offers an exceptional opportunity for boys from across the Greater New Haven metro area to sharply upgrade their game. “Our teams have competed on a regional and national level for years,” says Boys & Girls Club of New Haven’s Athletic Director Tharon Mayes, “That’s very prideful, but we are not only about basketball. Our AAU basketball program is committed to the academic success of our players.”

AAU Basketball is More Than Winning on the Court

The AAU basketball program at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven reflects the Club’s broader goals of establishing healthy lifestyles and academic success.

While delivering an exceptionally high level of coaching for basketball skills and game strategy, the program requires that school report cards also are collected from all team members. “Doing well in school is part of the what’s required to be in our AAU basketball program,” says Mayes. “That not only opens the doors to more college scholarship opportunities. It also greatly expands the opportunities for great futures – in whatever our kids choose to do.”  Tutors and mentors are available to support all the children and teen participating in any of the Boys & Girls Club programming. The Club also coordinates with the child’s teachers.

“Our AAU kids now challenge each other for academic achievement, says Mayes. “School comes first. Not doing well in school? The player will not play until they do. Today, most of our players are A or B students.”

“Our mindset is not about going pro,” says Mayes, “but it is about creating great futures. Basketball can help our kids get into college, but the character building that we work towards helps them get the college degree that will give the opportunity to succeed wherever their interests or passions take them.”

For more information, contact Coach Mayes at: (203) 787-0187 or tharon.mayes@bgcnewhaven.org.

Also contact Coach Mayes if you are interested in developing an AAU basketball program for girls.

Comcast

$25,000 GRANT FROM COMCAST SUPPORTS BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF NEW HAVEN’S NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Grant will provide new skill-building and educational experiences for more than 200 Club members and open doors to new opportunities and brighter futures

NEW HAVEN, December 14, 2015 – The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven (BGCNH) was joined by Mayor Toni Harp and representatives of Comcast on Friday to celebrate the grand opening of the Club’s new “Center of Innovation,” which was built with the help of a $25,000 grant from Comcast.  This computer lab will provide Club members with state-of-the-art technology and is being outfitted with brand new top-of-the-line computers, a media center, smart TV, surround sound, tablets, cameras, printer, furniture and a fresh coat of paint.  The Center includes project-based, hands-on activities that teach digital literacy, while developing creativity and self-expression. Club members will have ample opportunities to explore, experiment and test their own ideas using these new tools.

In addition, the Center will allow the Club to roll out more programs, like the My.Future technology initiative, a cutting-edge technology education program that provides hands-on experience and enables Boys & Girls Club members to select from more than 40 activities to help them understand how to safely and productively engage online, and identify and develop digital interests – from Internet basics for technology beginners, to robotics, coding, game design and online journalism for advanced learners.   Comcast is the Presenting Sponsor of the My.Future technology initiative and in 2015, the Comcast Foundation invested more than $3 million in Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) My.Future technology initiative.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, eighty percent (80%) of jobs in the next decade will require a solid foundation of technical skills. Based on these statistics, it is imperative that BGCNH provide resources that helps better prepare Club members for the global workforce.  By incorporating innovative digital, group-orientated learning, like the My.Future initiative, the Club will assist young people to strengthen their character development, leadership and college/career readiness skills.

“We are extremely grateful to Comcast and excited about the new opportunities that await our Club members,” said the Club’s Executive Director, Stephanie Barnes. “This grant allowed us to build our “Center of Innovation” that will allow an estimated 200 New Haven-area youth to experience new and stimulating programs, like the My.Future initiative, that combine education, technology, workforce preparation and the arts.”

“We’re pleased to support the New Haven Boys & Girls Club and thank them for all they do in the New Haven community,” said Kristen Roberts, Vice President of Public Relations and Community Investment for Comcast’s Western New England Region, which includes Connecticut.  “Comcast is dedicated to expanding digital literacy, promoting service and building tomorrow’s leaders, and support of this technology center helps to bridge the digital divide so that all students have access to computers and the internet, along with the training to understand how to use them safely.”
