1st Annual Alumni Golf Tournament

Starting at 9am on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Hunter Golf Club in Meriden

The Boys and Girls Club of New Haven is pleased to announce our 1st Annual Alumni Golf Tournament that will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Hunter Golf Club in Meriden. This is an important event for the Club as it raises money to help us continue to serve over 1,300 youth every year through programs that focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and leadership.

We will dedicate our inaugural Alumni Tournament to Mr. Tom Fleming, a longtime educator and Boys & Girls Club alumnus and supporter. Tom was a true mentor, coach and friend whose dedication to the youth of the New Haven community is unrivaled. A portion of the proceeds will fund scholarships to deserving New Haven students.

The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven invites you to become a sponsor for this event. Sponsorship offers an excellent opportunity to increase visibility of your company with a prominent presence at the tournament. In return, your company will be recognized in a variety of ways and it will help one of the largest and oldest youth serving agencies in New Haven. A summary of the sponsorship opportunities and benefits is enclosed for your review.

Our programs serve a critical need in our community, helping young people navigate challenges and providing support to help them overcome daunting obstacles. As young people move from challenge-to-challenge, in their schools, neighborhoods and families, the Club stands as a consistent and nurturing presence.

Help us continue to ensure that the next generation of young people can learn, have fun, be free to dream of the future and work to make those dreams come true at the Boys and Girls Club of New Haven.

February Recess 2017

Our AAU basketball program offers an exceptional opportunity for boys from across the Greater New Haven metro area to sharply upgrade their game. “Our teams have competed on a regional and national level for years,” says Boys & Girls Club of New Haven’s Athletic Director Tharon Mayes, “That’s very prideful, but we are not only about basketball. Our AAU basketball program is committed to the academic success of our players.”

For Tryout information click on image below. Today’s (3/15) tryouts have been postponed to Monday, March 20th

Mayes knows what it takes to become a player-scholar athlete. Mayes was a star at Florida State University. He remains one of the leading scorers in the schools history and was honored by an induction into the ACC Hall of Fame. After graduation, Mayes played in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers and then enjoyed a long professional career in Europe. He also played on the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven nationally-ranked AAU basketball teams back in the early1980’s.

“We win if they go to school”

AAU Basketball is More Than Winning on the Court

The AAU basketball program at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven reflects the Club’s broader goals of establishing healthy lifestyles and academic success.

While delivering an exceptionally high level of coaching for basketball skills and game strategy, the program requires that school report cards also are collected from all team members. “Doing well in school is part of the what’s required to be in our AAU basketball program,” says Mayes. “That not only opens the doors to more college scholarship opportunities. It also greatly expands the opportunities for great futures – in whatever our kids choose to do.”  Tutors and mentors are available to support all the children and teens participating in any of the Boys & Girls Club programming. The Club also coordinates with the child’s teachers.

“Our AAU kids now challenge each other for academic achievement, says Mayes. “School comes first. Not doing well in school? The player will not play until they do. Today, most of our players are A or B students.”

“Our mindset is not about going pro,” says Mayes, “but it is about creating great futures. Basketball can help our kids get into college, but the character building that we work towards helps them get the college degree that will give the opportunity to succeed wherever their interests or passions take them.”

For more information, contact Coach Mayes at: (203) 787-0187 or

Also contact Coach Mayes if you are interested in developing an AAU basketball program for girls.

Lowe’s and Boys & Girls Clubs of America build pride at 50 clubs in 50 states through $2.5m Renovation Across the Nation

NEW HAVEN – Renovation Across the Nation. Led by Lowes, and in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, this major initiative is giving $50,000 to one Club per state, for a total of $2.5 million in critical repairs, improvements and refurbishments around the country. We are excited to share that the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven will receive the $50,000 grant for the state of Connecticut – and these funds will be put towards facility improvement. “The Boys & Girls Club of New Haven is excited to receive this funding to make key improvements to our Columbus Ave. site. We plan to create a new learning center and multimedia room which will allow us to attract more young people to our programs,” said Stephanie Barnes, the Club’s executive director.

“Boys & Girls Clubs drive academic success, influence positive health and wellness, and build good character and citizenship for America’s kids and teens, putting them on a path to great futures,” said Jim Clark, president and chief executive officer of BGCA. “Our partnership with Lowe’s holistically impacts Clubs – addressing critical improvements needed while bringing the skills and dedication of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers to leave a lasting mark on Clubs and in the lives of our members, staff and local communities.”

To create the largest single initiative ever undertaken by Lowe’s and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one Club in each state was selected from Clubs in need of significant repairs and improvements. Lowe’s will support a wide range of enhancements ranging from kitchen repairs to amenities that influence creativity and well-being like music studios and counseling spaces.
